Welcome to another installment of “Last Week in Geekdom” where I comb the internet for all the news you need to know so you don’t have to. This week’s been pretty busy for me so I’m sorry if my posts have been getting delayed, but I’m still working towards getting more reviews and articles out once I have a more solid schedule. As for highlights from this week: An anime festival in Daghestan was threatened with violence and forced to cancel; EC Comics are coming to the big screen; and tons of anime announcements are starting to trickle in. I know I probably missed some anime announcements, and I know I did not include the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid among them as there still isn’t a reliable source to confirm the announcement. Be sure to check out the videos and articles below and, as always, have a great Sunday!

Top Anime and Manga News

An anime festival in Daghestan (a federal subject of Russia) has been threatened with violence and death by so-called defenders of Daghestani culture and religion. Some 100-150 young men surrounded the convention threatening to shoot and kill participants over perceived “corruption of the youth” of the nation. Police called to the scene turned on con participants claiming the convention was an LGBT gathering while hurling insults.

Shonen Jump will publish five 1-shot manga for Valentine’s Day. All five 1-shots are romantic comedies done by different creators. To Love Ru creator Kentaru Yabuki and the My Hero Academia 1-shot creator Yoko Akiyama among others are included in the creators featured in this issue.

Voice actor Kinryuu Arimoto has passed away at the age of 77 due to cancer. He is best known for his role as Whitebeard in One Piece. He has also starred in Psycho Pass as Tomomi Masaoka and Fullmetal Alchemist as Priest Cornello.

Top Comics News

Y: The Last Man has been picked up by FX for a TV adaptation, simply titled “Y.” The show will premiere sometime in 2020 and will feature Barry Keoghan as Yorick alongside Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, and others. Y: The Last Man was originally published in 2002 and has since won many Eisner Awards and received the first Hugo Award for Graphic Literature. I’m very excited to see where this one goes.

In other FX news, the TV series Legion will be ending with the upcoming 3rd season. Series creator Noah Hawley has said that he always envisioned the series ending in three seasons and that the ending will be its natural conclusion.

The finalists for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics have been announced. The award strives to highlight the best underrepresented voices in comics that are striving to create a wider diversity of creations. This year’s finalists include: Pappa Cherry, The Snagglepuss Chronicles, and The Carpet Merchant among others. The winner is set to be announced on February 15th.

EC Comics is returning to fame with a TV and film project in the works from Hivemind, the company behind The Witcher series. The TV series will be inspired by EC’s Weird Fantasy Books and the film will be a biopic feature around the life of publisher William M. Gaines.
